The Vatican Document
It’s been reported that the eight-page document from the Vatican on the issue of homosexuality and priesthood, which will be made public at the end of the month, states:
practicing gays, men with “deeply rooted” homosexual tendencies and those who support gay culture cannot become priests
and adds:
men with “passing” homosexual tendencies that were never acted on can be ordained — but only if they have overcome them for at least three years
Previous post here.
OK, so if you’re REALLY gay and think being gay is OK you can’t be a priest, but if you’re only a little bit gay and don’t like gay stuff, you can? Or is this more like straight guys who have “deeply rooted” heterosexual tendencies and can’t keep it in their pants (or cassock) as opposed to straight guys who have never acted on their heterosexual tendencies or overcome them for at least 3 years, i.e. are celibate? So, is the Vatican simply stating that if you’re really into sexual relations in any form you can’t be a priest? Is it any wonder the Catholic Church is suffering from a major recruitment shortfall?
I would say so.
They should just state that no one who has ever been aroused by anything can be ordained – and just put an end to priesthood with that.
