Jennifer Harris claims she was harassed by Penn State’s basketball coach Rene Portland because Portland believed Harris was a lesbian. Portland has stated that “performance and attitude in relation to basketball” were the reasons why Harris was no longer on the team.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights filed a complaint yesterday with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission for Harris.

According to the center, the complaint names Portland, Penn State and the university’s athletic director Tim Curley as defendants. The complaint says they violated the Pennsylvania Fair Educational Opportunities Act by discriminating against Harris and harassing her from late 2003 to June 2005, when she left Penn State. Harris is now at James Madison University.

Portland denied the accusation, and the university has said it will investigate them.
