Massachusetts does not require that parents be notified about surveys, but it does require notification of sex-education programs.

Ah, just as I thought, this is from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey put out by the CDC! My coworkers have been involved in advocating with them for *more* questions pertaining to lgbtq stuff. I use the stats from these surveys *all the time* in trainings to schools on LGBT youth issues. I am so not happy to hear that there is all this parental complaining that might run interference with gathering more data! Massachussetts has always been a good source for these stats…
