Obligatory and Facultative Homosexuals
I was going to comment on this, but it’s such a nice day outside and I’m in a good mood today. Why ruin it?
Insetad I thought I’d talk about Just how gay am I?, a question from Suzi Godson and Dr. Thomas Stuttaford’s column at The Times. Tell me he doesn’t look like Larry David. I just love him. Larry David, that is. Do you feel some type of “Men I Love” (okay, maybe not love) category coming on? I do. And what a mix that is going to be!
Anyway… back to Just how gay am I?:
I’m 49 and I’ve been married for 23 years but I’ve recently begun having liaisons with other men. I had some homosexual feelings before I got married but they have increased recently as my desire for my wife has decreased. However, I’m still unsure about the extent of my “gaynessâ€. What should I do?
I, being fascinated by labels, found this part of Dr. Stuttaford’s response interesting:
One of the ways in which homosexuals were formerly categorised was by the extent to which they were “obligatory †or “facultativeâ€.
Obligatory homosexuals had sex only with men, even if their lives were filled with seductive, alluring women. Facultative homosexual men were those who would prefer, but perhaps only just, sex with a woman but, if none was available, would make do with a man. As Dr Dunlop used to say: “Given the circumstances, they would accept any port in a storm.â€
I’ve never heard of obligatory or fucultative homosexuals. What about men who would prefer sex with men, but would make do with a woman? Hmmm.
I don’t know how gay this man is. I’ll guess 91%.
I’d recommend taking one of the “How Gay Am I?” online quizzes like Am I Gay?, Gay-O-Meter, Are You Gay?, or
The Ultimate, 100% Accurate Gay Test, but the last time I took an Are You a Lesbian online quiz my results said I was straight and homophobic! Stupid quizzes. I’m a straight lesbian. Doesn’t anyone get it?
What else ya got for me? This:
*Problems with the Latino media, gay pranks and on-air ridicule
*Gays and tax day
*Honoring queer youth and their allies
*How many times am I going to run across this commentary?
*Silent teachers
