Fox Lane High School Cancels Kate Bornstein Appearance
Kate Bornstein’s appearance at Fox Lane High School’s annual Wellness Day was cancelled by school officials after a local businessman complained about Kate’s personal Web site to the superintendent of schools, saying it contained “sexually explicit material.”
Kate planned to speak to students about alternatives to teen suicide.
I just went to the article and to Kate’s website. I don’t get what is sexually explicit at her site or offensive. It’s transphobia to me.
I think you’re right, Jen. Perhaps it was the review of her book on Amazon. com that listed one of the alternatives to suicide as “Get Laid. Please.”
I’ve had the distinct pleasure of meeting Kate several times (and getting her to autograph her books for me! :)) and have seen her perform twice. She is just *so* awesome. It truly saddens me that people are so close-minded. My god. What better topic to discuss at a high school than alternatives to teen suicide — especially by someone that you know the kids will pay attention to.
Jen, you obviously didn’t dig deep enough to find the smut. On Kate’s site, I’ve seen pictures of breast cleavage, two women hugging and even the words “orgasm” and “sex”! Of course, I’ve seen all that at Wal-Mart, too, which only goes to show that we must keep our guard up at all times to prevent the moral decay of Amerika.
I’ve never heard of her before – certainly an interesting site to read. Her work seems good, and worthwhile.
However, I must be missing something. I really don’t see any sexually explicit material!
