New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine has signed legislation that gives gay couples “adoption, inheritance, hospital visitation and medical decision-making rights and the right not to testify against a partner in state court.”

New Jersey gay couples have yet to be given the option of entering into a “marriage,” and are not entitled to the same benefits straight couples receive from the federal government. For example, they cannot collect deceased partners’ Social Security benefits.
