Philadelphia’s Zoning Board of Adjustment yesterday gave the go-ahead to a city-sponsored group home for abused and neglected gay, lesbian and transgender teens.

The Bethel Community, on the 900 block of South Third Street, will have space for eight teenagers living under the care of the city’s Department of Human Services. The facility will be administered by Lutheran Children and Family Service, a nonprofit social-services agency under contract with the city.

Bethel will be one of only a small handful of similar facilities across the country. Other group homes for gay youths are located in Massachusetts, California, and New York – where Philadelphia currently contracts to send five youngsters.

Human Services Commissioner Cheryl Ransom-Garner said a gay-oriented group home would help those who might be bullied or teased elsewhere in the foster-care system, which consists of group homes as well as placements with foster families.
