Lance Bass on the “outting”
There are plenty of celebrities, or sort-of celebrities, whom I don’t follow. Lance Bass is one of them. However, I heard about his being “outted” and got plenty curious. I put the word in quotes because I’m not sure, given subsequent press, if he was in fact outted. Here’s part of the story from this article:
Bass’ spokeswoman Cindy Owen said to ABCNEWS.com that the singer would not comment on the report and that the singer would not comment on whether he felt that the Post had “outed” him.
She did not return calls today to comment on Bass’ magazine interview, which will hit newsstands later this week.
Bass had long been living a double life, according to The Washington Blade, a leading newspaper for the gay and lesbian community. Managing editor Kevin Naff took him to task for it in his blog on the Blade‘s Web site.
Apparently Bass himself said that “he kept his sexuality a secret mostly out of concern that it would hurt the boy band.”
On 9.21.06, Bass and his boyfriend, reality show participant Reichen Lehmkuhl, gave their first interview together here.
“Someone outed you. Who?†Billy asked.
“No one in particular. It just started getting written about … NY Post’s Page Six picks it up … it just kind of trickles,†Lance said.
And did Lance’s mom really learn he was gay from reading Page Six?
“Yeah, basically, yeah. It was just a question she had to my sister, actually, was the one who had to tell her,†Lance revealed.

I think it’s just horrible that he couldn’t even trust his own mother with the secret. What’s up with that? I told my parents within six months of leaving their home (I wasn’t sure that they wouldn’t throw me out on the street) . . . the fact that he couldn’t tell his mother says a lot about their relationship, or his own internalized homophobia.
